Fusing quartz: from raw material to vitreous silica
Heraeus Quarzglas' technology competence starts in the first step of fusing quartz to vitreous silica. By not only selecting excellent raw materials but purifying these in house. This process assures that fused quartz made by Heraeus has a very low impurity content.

The next step to manufacture vitreous silica is the actual fusion of quartz. Here Heraeus Quarzglas offers the widest variety of processes, all in one hand:
- electric fusion (continues as well as batch processes)
- flame fusion
- soot process
- ceramic route

Heraeus Quarzglas has gathered a lot of experience in making quartz glass for over 100 years. This knowledge is used to match customer requirements not only with standard products (such as ingots, cylinders, plates, tubes and rods) but provide tailored solutions.

Post fusion processes
In addition to the fusion of quartz, Heraeus offers additional production steps, such as cutting to size and annealing to reduce OH-content and thermally induced stress.

Material testing and quality control
To guarentee the high standards of it's products Heraeus Quarzglas makes extensive use of measurement devices both in house and at external laboratories. The material tests include detailed chemical impurity content analysis, transmission and OH-content measurements.
